Chapter 38 Fugaku Uchiha's Predicament
Chapter 38 Fugaku Uchiha's Predicament
Hokage Building, Hokage's Office.
The windows were tightly closed, and the room was filled with swirling smoke.
The Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, sat behind a mountain of documents, his iconic straw hat lying to the side. The flickering light from his pipe illuminated his face, which looked much older than it had been six months ago.
In the shadowy corner of the room, Shimura Danzo, leaning on a cane, half-closed his eyes, his single eye gleaming with a chilling light.
"Minato Namikaze, Toru Nishikawa."
Hiruzen Sarutobi exhaled a smoke ring, his voice gentle yet carrying an undeniable authority, "The report on the mission to the Land of Rain was already sent back by Jiraiya via hawk. You did a great job, not only cutting off supplies but also returning alive."
"This is the duty of a Konoha ninja," Minato Namikaze replied neither humbly nor arrogantly.
"Hmph, duty?"
The person in the shadows snorted coldly, slamming their cane heavily on the ground. "Since you know your responsibilities, why were you vague about Fugaku Uchiha's eyes in your report? That black chakra entity, and that black flame... you saw it with your own eyes, didn't you?"
The air froze instantly.
Nishikawa Tetsu narrowed his eyes. Danzo, that old bastard.
However, he was not intimidated by Danzo's imposing manner and had already prepared his response on the way back.
"That's the ultimate form of chakra under high emotional pressure."
Nishikawa Tetsu said in a serious tone, "The situation was critical at the time. We were all on the verge of death. Captain Fugaku, in extreme anger and grief, exhausted his life force to unleash that power. As for the specific principle, it falls under the category of the Uchiha clan's bloodline limit, and as an outsider, I cannot delve into it."
"Overdrawing your life force?" Danzo narrowed his eyes. "You mean, that was a coincidence?"
"Whether it's a coincidence or not is irrelevant, Danzo."
Hiruzen Sarutobi interrupted Danzo's interrogation, picked up a scroll from the table, and his expression became unusually solemn.
"The important thing is... now the whole world knows."
The third generation tossed the scroll to the two men.
Nishikawa Tetsu opened it and his brows furrowed instantly.
That was a notice sent by Hanzo the Salamander to the daimyo of the five great nations.
In the letter, Hanzo lavished praise on Konoha, saying that it had produced three legendary Sannin who could survive his attacks, as well as a young Uchiha boy with eyes capable of destroying the world.
Hanzo described in detail how the black skeletal giant easily crushed elite Jonin and how the black flames were impossible to extinguish.
Finally, Hanzo added a scathing remark:
"Congratulations to Konoha. Although Madara Uchiha is gone, a new Asura has been born."
"This is a case of flattery to kill."
Nishikawa Tetsu closed the scroll, instantly seeing through Hanzo's sinister intentions: "He deliberately exaggerated Fugaku-senpai's threat, partly to find an excuse for his defeat, and partly... to use someone else to do his dirty work."
"That's right."
Hiruzen Sarutobi sighed.
"Right now, both Iwagakure and Kumogakure have sent 'concerned' inquiries to Konoha, and espionage activities have surged. They fear the emergence of a second Uchiha Madara. And within the village..."
The third generation paused, a hint of worry flashing in his eyes:
"The rumors can no longer be suppressed."
……
Stepping out of the Hokage Building, the long-awaited sunshine didn't bring much warmth.
On the streets, the villagers seemed to be living normal lives, but whenever the "police department" or "Uchiha" was mentioned, everyone's expression would become somewhat unnatural.
"Have you heard? Captain Fugaku from the police department is said to be a monster..."
"Shh! Keep your voice down! I heard his eyes can kill someone just by looking at them, and even burn the corpse to ashes!"
"This is terrifying... The Uchiha clan was already sinister, and now this scourge has appeared. How can we even stay in this village?"
Minato Namikaze, listening to the whispers by the roadside, looked rather grim: "This is too much! Fugaku-senpai was clearly trying to save us..."
"People only believe the fears they want to believe."
Nishikawa Tetsu looked towards the Uchiha clan's territory in the distance. The gates there were tightly closed, making it appear exceptionally desolate and chilling.
"Hanzo's move was too ruthless. It not only caused external trouble but also ignited internal strife in Konoha. Fugaku-senpai is probably at the very center of the storm right now."
Moreover, the village not only failed to stop the rumors, but he even suspected that Danzo, that scoundrel, was fanning the flames behind the scenes.
In other words, he didn't have much of a foundation yet, and his strength wasn't strong enough, otherwise he really was prepared to chop this old guy to death with one blow.
"Let's go see Master Fugaku."
……
The Uchiha clan's territory, a private training ground near the Naka Shrine.
This is a forbidden area of the Uchiha clan, and normally only core clan members can enter.
However, because of Fugaku, the guards did not stop Nishikawa Toru and Minato.
Before even entering the training field, one could hear heavy breathing coming from inside.
"Again!"
"Young clan leader, your health..."
"I said, let's do it again!"
Nishikawa Tetsu and Minato entered the arena and witnessed an astonishing scene.
Fugaku Uchiha was shirtless and drenched in sweat.
The bandages have been removed from his eyes, and his pupils have returned to their black color.
Opposite him were three Jonin from the Uchiha clan, all panting heavily and looking at their young clan leader with terrified expressions.
"Fugaku-senpai," Minato called out.
Fugaku Uchiha paused in his movements.
He turned his head and saw the two of them. His previously tense face finally relaxed a little, and he waved for the sparring partners to step back.
"You're back."
Fugaku walked to the sidelines, picked up a towel and wiped his sweat. His voice was calm, but it revealed a deep weariness.
"How's your recovery going?" Nishikawa Tetsu asked, his gaze sweeping over Fugaku's eyes. "Is your vision affected?"
"It's a little blurry, but it's not a big problem."
Fugaku sat down, picked up the water bottle, and took a big gulp. "As long as I don't open those eyes, I'm usually fine, but..."
He gave a wry smile and pointed outside the clan's territory:
"The external pressure is more of a headache for me than the side effects on my eyes."
"We've seen Hanzo's letter." Nishikawa Tetsu sat down next to him. "The village's higher-ups are very wary of you now."
"Not just at the top."
A cold glint flashed in Fugaku's eyes. "The clan is in chaos too. Those radical old guys are getting excited like crazy when they see that I've awakened the Mangekyou Sharingan. They keep talking about the 'great revival of the Uchiha clan' and 'restoring the glory of our ancestor Madara' in my ear,' wanting me to lead the clan to fight for more power."
"And the conservatives and those ordinary clansmen..." Fugaku paused, his tone turning bitter, "They are afraid of me. I can feel it. Even clansmen with the same surname look at me as if I were a monster that could go out of control at any moment."
"The higher-ups are suspicious, foreign enemies are eyeing us, the clansmen are fearful, and there is discord within the clan as well."
Nishikawa Tetsu concluded, "Senior, you're currently on a deserted island."
Minato Namikaze said with some concern, "What should we do? If this continues, Fugaku-senpai will be driven crazy."
"Crazy? I'm not crazy."
Fugaku snorted and threw the towel in his hand to the ground. "I just feel disgusted. We risked our lives on the front lines, and now we have to face this kind of suspicion when we come back."
"This is exactly the result Danzo and Hanzo wanted."
Nishikawa Tetsu's eyes gradually sharpened.
"They want to isolate you and push you to extremes. Once you actually do something outrageous out of anger, they will have a reason to target the Uchiha."
Fugaku was a little irritated; the conversation after reuniting with his teammates whom he hadn't seen in a long time was too heavy.
He waved his hand: "Let's not talk about this anymore. Let's go to the barbecue restaurant. It's time to keep my promise."
