Chapter 209 210: Hostage

Chapter 209 210: Hostage

Misa nodded slowly as she stared at the large metal cylinder. She turned to the Italian woman and asked in a calm voice, "Why did you ask me to come here all of a sudden?"

The Italian woman looked at Misa for a few seconds without saying anything. Her eyes were serious and her face looked tense. Then she said, "There is a problem."

Misa felt her heart beat faster. She stepped a little closer and asked, "What kind of problem?"

The Italian woman sighed and crossed her arms. "Judith is all of a sudden seeming rather uninterested about us."

Misa blinked hard. She could not believe those words. "What do you mean?" she asked quickly. "Miss Judith has always supported everything we do here. She funds the medicine for the sick people upstairs and the real work down here too."

The Italian woman muttered under her breath, "She looks like she is moving to something different. I do not know what it is but she no longer shares the same hatred we have for the traitors. Because if she did she would never ignore my request to fund this project even more."

Misa thought about it carefully. She muttered back, "Well she is probably holding back. Fearing others will find out about this. No matter what if the public or the traitors find out what is going on here it could be dangerous. The whole base could get attacked. We could lose everything we built."

The Italian woman nodded her head fast. "That is true," she muttered. Then she looked straight at Misa and said, "And that is why you need to be my new agent of communication with her."

Misa's eyes went wide. She shook her head right away and asked, "Why me? There are so many others who work closer to her. I am just a doctor mixing herbs most days."

The Italian woman muttered in her strong Italian tone, "Because the last one tried to leak information. To be more specific she tried to sell information to the opposite party. It seems there is something going on. Something out of even Judith's control."

Misa muttered softly, "But I have no experience acting as an agent. I do not know how to talk secretly or carry messages without getting caught."

The Italian woman smiled a little and muttered, "Well there is a first time for everything."

With those words she turned around and walked away without another look. She left Misa standing there looking lost and confused in the middle of the busy lab.

Misa stood still for a long moment. She whispered to herself, "Me as an agent? How am I supposed to do this? I have my daughter waiting at home and patients upstairs who need me every day."

She started to walk through the lab to clear her head. She looked at the people working hard on their glowing screens. One young scientist noticed her and called out, "Miss Tachibana, the new herb mix you gave us yesterday worked really well on the fever patients. They are sleeping better now."

Misa forced a small smile and replied, "That is good to hear. Keep checking their temperature every hour. We cannot let any infection spread."

Another worker nearby looked up from his machine and said, "The power readings are steady today. Do you think we can run a small test on the core soon, Miss Misa?"

Misa nodded and answered, "Maybe. But tell the team to double check the wires first. We do not want any accidents like last month."

The worker gave her a thumbs up and said, "Will do. You always think of safety first."

Misa kept walking slowly past the tables. She muttered to herself again, "Everyone is so focused. I wish I could feel the same right now."

But suddenly she started to feel her head heavy. The world around her began to spin. The lights on the screens looked blurry and the beeping sounds grew louder in her ears. "What is happening?" she whispered. She stopped walking and held her head with both hands.

The spinning got worse. A strange heat spread through her body. Without thinking she reached down and touched her vagina through her clothes. Her fingers felt warm liquid secreting there. It was sticky and kept coming out more and more.

She pulled her hand back and looked at it. "This is not normal sweat or anything else," she said quietly. Soon she realized it was not some other kind of liquid. She was ovulating rather hard like she had never before. The feeling was so strong it made her knees shake.

Misa looked around the lab. Her nose picked up a new smell in the air. It was sweet and familiar and it pulled at her like a rope. She walked toward the direction that smell was coming from. "Where is this coming from?" she muttered as she moved.

She walked out of the lab without anyone noticing. She followed the road that led to a rather lonely alley between two old buildings. The smell grew stronger with every step she took. Her heart beat fast and her body felt hotter.

Finally she found the thing that she smelled. It was a piece of underwear lying on the dirty ground in the corner of the alley. Misa immediately recognized that smell. It was the exact scent she remembered so well.

She grabbed the underwear quickly and brought it close to her nose. She smelled it even more and muttered the word, "Ren."

Suddenly someone grabbed her face from behind. A strong hand closed her mouth forcefully and held her tight. Misa tried to struggle right away. She wanted to use her power. It should have killed whoever was trying to attack her in one second. But nothing happened. Her power did not work at all because of the black band still locked on her wrist.

She kept struggling hard against the hand. She twisted her body and tried to push back but the grip was too strong. Finally she stopped struggling. She felt too tired to move anymore. She looked back slowly to see a familiar face.

Misa suddenly stepped back. She found it hard to believe what she was seeing. In front of her was the man she had been dreaming about ever since the day she lost him. The man that she wanted all day and night. The man of her life. The only man.

She suddenly shouted, "Ren!" and went forward to hug him tight. But he pushed her away with one hand. He muttered in a low voice, "You fell for the trick."

Suddenly Misa's head started to spin even more. The alley turned dark and everything around her faded away as she fainted on the spot.

The man who looked like Ren removed his face like a mask. He turned into a red haired woman right in front of her. She smiled widely and muttered, "After a long time, friend. If Ren will not listen to me I will make him listen. So you will come with me."

She said it with a big smile on her face as she picked up the fainted Misa and carried her away into the shadows.

Ren stared at the glowing screens floating right in front of his face. The two plain wings of light spread out like before, but only a few lines of words moved across them. Everything else stayed dark and empty.

"Why does this not show me the correct destination?" he muttered in a frustrated voice. "It only lights up when they get close. That is useless right now! They could be anywhere in this huge building. Come on, system, work properly for once!"

He waited for a second as if the screens would answer him. Nothing changed. The words stayed the same. Ren blinked hard and looked around the empty hallway.

He realized he was talking to himself out loud like a fool. He suddenly closed his mouth tight and muttered under his breath, "I must be going crazy. First the power shows up, now I am arguing with floating lights. Get it together, Ren."

He shook his head and started walking again. The dark corridor stretched ahead with only weak lights on the walls. Broken pipes dripped water somewhere far away. Ren kept one hand near his side, ready for anything.

"I am on my way to meet Anna," he said quietly to himself as he moved. "I know she is not dead. After that attack the other day I could not find her anywhere. She just vanished. But I can feel it. She is still alive."

He kept walking deeper into the dark. The air grew colder. His footsteps echoed softly. Then he heard it. A low scratching sound came from behind him, like nails dragging across metal.

Ren stopped and listened. "What was that?" he whispered. "Is someone following me?"

The sound stopped when he stopped. He took one step forward. The scratching started again, closer this time. Ren turned around fast but saw nothing. Only shadows.

"Okay, stay calm," he told himself in a low voice. "It is probably just rats or old pipes. Nothing to worry about. Anna needs me. Keep moving."

He started walking faster. The scratching followed. It grew louder with every step he took away from it. Now it sounded like many legs moving at once, clicking and scraping.

Ren muttered, "This is not normal. Why is it getting closer the more I walk away? Come out already if you want a fight!"

He broke into a light run. The sound sped up too. It turned into wet slaps and heavy breathing mixed together. The hallway felt smaller now. The weak lights flickered like they were scared.

"What the hell is chasing me?" Ren said out loud. His voice echoed back at him. "Anna, if you can hear me, stay hidden! I will deal with this first!"

The sound was right behind him now. He could feel hot breath on his neck. Then a loud screech filled the air. A zombie-like creature jumped straight at him from the ceiling. Its body looked rotten and twisted, but its head was the worst part. It had eight spider-crab legs sprouting from a cracked skull, clicking and snapping with sharp pincers.

Ren spun around fast. "Not today!" he shouted. He raised one hand and pushed out his power. "Imperial Qi!"

A bright wave of energy shot from his palm and slammed into the creature mid-air. The zombie thing screamed as the Qi burned through its chest. Legs twitched wildly. The crab head exploded into black goo. The whole body crashed to the floor and stopped moving.

Ren stood there breathing hard. He looked down at the dead thing. Smoke rose from the hole in its chest. The spider-crab legs still jerked a little before going still.

"What the hell is this?" he muttered, staring at the creature. "It looks like something from a nightmare. Since when do places like this have monsters? This is not normal at all."

He kicked the body once to make sure it was dead. No movement. Ren shook his head and looked back at his floating screens. They stayed dark like nothing happened.
